March 15th Speech of Viktor Orbán

Despite heavy rainfall, tens of thousands were present at the traditional March 15h rally of Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Union in the Royal Castle district of Buda where party-chairman Viktor Orbán delivered his speech. The former prime minister of Hungary spoke of the change taking place all over the world and criticized the incumbent socialist government for going against the achievements of the democratic transition in 1989, labeling Hungary's past seven years as "a socialist attempt to restore the ancient regime".

Viktor Orbán spoke of the profound change the 1848 revolutions brought about all across the European continent, drawing a parallel between the past and the present. "The Hungarian revolution triumphed, fulfilled its goals and demands: destroyed the feudalist structures once and for all and set Hungary free from its medieval prison", he said. The heroes and revolutionaries of 1848 knew something that is missing from today's man, "they could believe not only in higher powers or the future, but also in their capacity to change the world with their will. They believed they could change it, even against the giant Habsburg empire", he emphasized.

"If we believe in ourselves, we can change Hungary", said Orbán, adding that it was exactly because of this that the "men of the ancient regime" were trying their best to keep everything under their thumb. "The world we knew in the 20th century has collapsed. A global change is taking place and a new world order is about to take shape, just as a new era was ushered in by the revolutions of the 19th century", stated the chairman of Fidesz, adding that the past seven years in Hungary meant failures instead of successes, making "socialist Hungary a miserable place the same way as before the democratic transition". "This is where the socialist attempt to restore the ancient regime has led us", stated Orbán.

"We shall prove to all: if all of us believe in the change then there is no crisis we cannot overcome and no missions impossible", said the chairman of Fidesz, calling on "to reclaim our country from the men of the ancient regime, from these men of hopelessness who ruined Hungary and wanted to turn the wheels of history backwards in the past seven years."

"It's time to give back Hungary to those who worked, struggled and made sacrifices for her. To give it back to those who love Hungary and its people, language, its past, present and future, those who love her when it is hard to and who stay here when it would be easier to walk away, those who stand by this country when it gives nothing in return and those who see her greatness even at times when Hungary seems small. Time to give it back to those people who believe in Hungary, who have rebuilt it from its ruins after World War II and who freed her from the ancient communist regime and got the country back on its feet after the democratic transition. Hungary should belong to those who want to live their lives here and who want study, work and have their family here and live a joyous and successful life. It is high time that Hungary was given back to them", declared Viktor Orbán.

The chairman of Fidesz said this was "the last March 15th commemoration before the great change of our lives", adding that "the future should be won right here and now". "We can only succeed if we do all that we can today", he said, declaring that "the longer the incumbent socialists stay in power the bigger their defeat will be when the moment of truth comes. And that moment will come as it has always happened in history", said the chairman of Fidesz before ending his speech with the traditional "let's go Hungary, let's go, Hungarians!"
