Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Union fully supports an amendment to the Constitution that would reassuringly settle the issue of Holocaust denial, a phenomenon of rising concern all over Europe.
Fidesz's own initiative, that has been presented and upheld in Parliament on 29 June, 2008 proposes the introduction of the following language to the Constitution: "Denial, dispute or derogation of the importance of genocide and other crimes against humanity by the national socialist and communist regimes is prohibited."
To the contrary of repeated comments by the Hungarian Socialist Party and especially its Chairman, the Socialist Fraction denied to support any of Fidesz's amendments neither on the committee level nor in the plenary session of the vote.
To point at Fidesz and its leadership to find a scapegoat for the incapability of the Government to protect its citizens, the Socialist Party is again entering a dangerous political game by failing to mention that no other fraction in Parliament supported the Government's proposal. The inadequacy of the police guarding a Holocaust-denying march on Castle Hill is once again met by the reckless political voluntarism of the Socialist Party and its leadership to mask the Government's inability for compromise in such an important matter.
