Fidesz Youth Organization Expresses Solidarity with Tehran Demonstrators
|
Members of Fidelitas, the youth organization of Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Union, handed a petition to the Budapest Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran demanding to free political prisoners and to guarantee civic liberties, including the right to gather. |
Mr. Csaba Dömötör, foreign secretary of Fidelitas as well as vice-chairman of YEPP, the youth organization of the European People's Party, said: freedom "is a universal value and young Iranian demonstrators have the right to stand up for their human rights as well". "We came to the Iranian Embassy because we had seen demonstrations being cruelly and mercilessly suppressed by the security forces in Iran", he added.
"On the 20th anniversary of Hungary's democratic transition we think it is especially important to speak up against any form of totalitarianism and to express our solidarity with young protesters who fight for their freedom, wherever in the world they may be", stated Mr Dömötör.
Upon handing over the presentation to the Iranian embassy, Fidelitas chairman Péter Ágh stated: they presented their demands in three points. As well as demanding the Iranian government to free all political prisoners and to guarantee the right to gather freely, Fidelitas urges to respect the right to freedom of speech and to hold those accountable who were responsible for the bloodshed. "Iran should not be the country of innocently murdered young people and it is vital for the future prospects of Iranian democracy that those leaders responsible for ordering the shooting of innocent demonstrators be held accountable", said Mr. Ágh.
Following the demonstration, members of Fidelitas handed over a press release highlighting that the Iranian events have a Hungarian relevance due to far-right Jobbik. "Jobbik openly supports the Iranian regime which shows no signs of uncertainty even when it comes to killing innocent demonstrators. This is telling of Jobbik's idea of democracy. While at home, they speak up against the government yet they embrace an illiberal and oppressive regime abroad", states the press release.
Mr. Dömötör added: Jobbik's sympathy toward the Iranian regime is no novelty, the far-right party's chairman, Mr. Gábor Vona, has on several occasions held talks with the Iranian ambassador while the party's MEP Krisztina Morvai visited Iran. "We are saddened by the fact that Jobbik is openly supporting a regime which is not afraid to murder innocent people. This clearly exemplifies the far-right party's deceitfulness and political schizophrenia", said the foreign secretary of Fidelitas.
